Looking at the way they served and returned the ball and the length of some of the rallies it was easy to forget some of them were only eight years of age! How much the game has changed over the years and how talented our young handballers have become at such a tender age.
It was terrific to see these young children derive such enjoyment from taking part in the county Wall Ball under 9 competition at Ballymitty this evening and great to see such a spread of talent from a number of clubs across the county.
These are exciting times to be a handballer in Wexford and these young boys are giving every indication that the talent pool of very skillful players shows no signs of drying up any time soon. The job of everybody connected with this success is to manage it in a way that prioritizes participation over everything else and to resist the temptation to concentrate on the very best at the expense of building a numerically strong GAA Handball unit catering for and nurturing each of the children equally.
Collectively these children are the greatest resource GAA Handball Wexford have ever had and together they will bring the best out in each other. Meanwhile lets all sit back and enjoy the moment for what it is really is – children hitting a ball against the wall and enjoying it immensely.
