Wexford Completely Dominate Garda 60X30 National Championship

Report by Padhraic Roberts

Wexford handball had a great representation at the Garda National 60×30 championships finals held at Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park, Dublin last Wednesday with current players Robert Byrne, Michael O’Neill, Niall Maher , Padhraic Roberts and past players Mark Maher and Brendan O’Toole doing Wexford proud it the competition. Niall Maher (Kilmyshall) won the senior singles title defeating Robert Byrne (Bridgetown) on a scoreline of 21-4. Maher was in fantastic form as he killed balls from every inch of the alley. The Kilmyshall played some outstanding handball on the day and in the final put on a great show of pure powerful handball which Byrne found hard to handle.  Robert Byrne beat a fellow Wexford man Padhraic Roberts in the semi final to ensure a all Wexford final. Niall Maher defeated Brendan O’Toole, formerly of the Templeudigan Club, on his way to the final. In the Junior singles Micheal O’Neill had a fantastic win defeating Conor McDonald of Monaghan on a scoreline of 21-18. The Wexford man displayed some fantastic passing shots which in the end proved to be the difference between the two players. So finally to the open doubles where Mark Maher partnered with Conor McDonald defeated the Wexford pairing of Micheal O’Neill and Brendan O’Toole on a scoreline of 21-19. This was a terrific game of handball but in the end the experience and killing ability of McDonald combined with the fitness of Wexford’s Mark Maher proved too good for O’Neill and O’Toole. In all the representation form Wexford completely dominated proceeding for the day and a great supporter of Garda Handball who attended on the day was Assistant Commissioner Fintan Fanning, another Wexford man
