Three way play-off in county senior open singles championship

The competitive nature of the county 40×20 senior open singles championship was emphasised at Piercestown on Saturday last when Tommy Hynes produced a cracking performance to blow away the talented Daniel Kavanagh and put the proverbial ‘cat amongst the pigeons’ as far as the Group B qualifiers for the semi finals went.

Following an unconvincing opening loss to Peter Hughes, the St. Mary’s man found himself facing the championship trapdoor last weekend, knowing that anything less than a straight sets win would see him eliminated at the group stage. It was enough to galvanize the former champion into action mode and after he battled hard to win the first game 21-16, he put on the afterburners to scorch home 21-5 in the second. It left Hynes, Kavanagh and Hughes all level on 6 points and activated a play-off which will be held at Piercestown this coming Saturday evening at 7pm.

 The format for the play-off is as follows;

Group B playoff

A. Tommy Hynes (STY) v Peter Hughes (BAH) 1 x 21 ace game

B. Loser of match A v Daniel Kavanagh (STJ) 1 x 21 ace game

C. Winner of match A v Daniel Kavanagh (STJ) 1 x 21 ace game

Match C will not be played if the same player loses first two matches. In that event the result of the original championship match between the two qualifying players will determine the placings.

If all three players lose a match the placings will be decided by the number of points scored. If still level the number of points conceded will decide.
