Its male against female as the softball season kicks off next week with 47 matches
The softball season gets off to a flying start next week with a total of 47 matches in the county singles leagues taking place at Ballymitty, Castlebridge, Coolgreany, Kilmyshall, St. Mary’s, Taghmon and Templeudigan. All 10 groups from A to J inclusive will see action and everyone will hope to start their campaign by gathering some early points. A feature of this new softball initiative is that males and females will compete against each other for the first time in many years and this is certain to add considerable interest to the proceedings. The first of these clashes takes place at St. Mary’s in Wexford town on Tuesday evening when Gavin Lacey, Ballymitty takes on Jodie Keeling, St. Josephs in a Group G match.
The competition is also notable for the presence of 14 juveniles, as the County Board pursues its policy of intregating young players into the adult system of competitions. A small number of these will begin using the adult ball for the first time and how they will adapt to the bigger and faster ball will likely determine how they fare on this occasion.

With 69 players taking part in the leagues it is a big logistical task putting fixtures together each week and the cooperaiton of those taking part will be critical to the smooth running of the events. To assist with this the CCCC have produced a document outing the terms and conditions under which the competitions will be run and this should be read by all who are taking part.
