Handball in Wexford gets a real boost as 78 players sign up for the Winter Singles League

The recent successful completion of the county softball championship got handball up and running again in Wexford after the covid lockdown and the pace of the return has now moved up a notch with the news that 78 players have entered the county 4-wall Winter League which commences on Monday next October 11th. Click HERE for the opening fixtures. Fixture 2 will be released shortly and the intention is to keep two weeks ahead for the duration of the competition so that players can plan their schedules around their matches.

Every club in Wexford will be represented in this competition and the large entry is indicating that players are itching to get back to action after such a long absence. That said, safety must not be compromised and government and GAA Handball guidelines will still need to be adhered to at all times.

This years competition will have 13 divisions, 11 for men and 2 for women, and the groups can be seen HERE. A few notable changes from the last league which should be noted are (a) the scoring format has changed to 2 x 21 with tiebreak of 11 if required, (b) a ball striking an opponent will no longer be an automatic hinder, and may be called a point or handout if it is clearly not going to be up, and (c) timeouts will be of 60 second duration instead of the previous 30 seconds.
