After missing almost the entire 60×30 season due to knee cartilage problems, Tony Breen, Templeudigan made a successful return to the court at St. Josephs Handball Centre on Wednesday night last when took on and beat Felix Doran, New Ross  in the opening round of the county 40×20  junior singles championship.
The 60 year old veteran has spent the past three months in the gym working on strengthening the knee muscles sufficiently to extend his career a little bit longer and he was well pleased with his efforts which yielded a 21-6, 15-21, 21-13 victory.
The Templeudigan player started well against his 31 year old opponent and working hard throughout the first game he racked up a 21-6 win that was in no way reflective of the effort put in by Doran. The New Ross player done much better on the scoreboard in the second however as his spin serve created a few more chances and after they had been level at 15-15 it was he who pulled away to win it without further concession.
The third was hotly contested throughout but Breen was always in front and any doubts about his fitness considering his long absence were dispelled as he maintained a relentless pace all the way to the finish. The two points garnered will give him a fighting chance of making the knockout stages while Doran, who picked up a point for the game he won is likely to see this as two points dropped.
