Big guns begin to roar in softball championship

Tommy Hynes, St. Mary’s and Barry Goff, Castlebridge got their county softball championship up and running with ominously comfortable victories in the past week. Last years champion Hynes had a routine 21-12, 21-12 win over the strong Eugene Kelly, Castlebridge at Ballymitty, while 2017 champion Goff was ruthless in easing past Castlebridge clubmate David Kenny 21-2, 21-5 at the local court.

Also in the past fortnight the returning All Ireland minor softball doubles champion from 2000, Terry Gainfort, Castlebridge got the better of triple All Ireland under 21 champion from 2007-8 Mikie Berry, Barntown, in a 21-10, 14-21, 21-18 shootout at St. Mary’s.
