Kavanagh goes out to O'Neill in classic minor singles encounter
Daniel Kavanagh, Wexford and Tadgh O’Neill, Cork who fought out a classic All Ireland minor singles semi final at St. Josephs yesterday. In the end victory went the way of the Cork youngster on a scoreline of 18-21, 21-14, 21-7 and on the evidence of this hugely impressive display he will enter the final against Sean Kerr, Tyrone in two weeks time with every chance. Kavanagh overcame a slow start to take the first game 21-18, but after being level pegging at the half way point of the second, it was O’Neill who pulled clear to take it 21-14 and bring this enthralling tie to a third game. The Munster champion then went on to dominate the remainder of the match for a well merited 21-7 victory that his all out attacking play deserved. It was a hugely impressive performance from a youngster whose style is reminiscent of the great Paul Brady. Indeed it was his Brady-like offensive play that decided this contest as he went for winners at every opportunity. Kavanagh made it a terrific contest right to the finish but O’Neill’s style is pure 40×20 and his accuracy and shot selection was eye-catching throughout.
