It's a Woman's World as the women of Wexford get ready for Beginners Tournament
Written by Antoin Ó Braoin, Rúnaí Contae
Considerable interest is being shown in the proposed 40×20 beginners doubles tournament for women which is scheduled to commence in the next few weeks. A number of those intending to play were at the launch of the competition at St. Josephs Handball Centre on Wednesday evening when an outline of the format was presented by County Secretary Tony Breen
Assuming an entry of 12 players, the proposed format would see 4 groups of 3 players each resulting in the following matches;
Group 1 (Players A, B, C) v Group 2 (Players D, E, F)
AB v DE, AB v DF, AB v EF AC v DE, AC v DF, AC v EF BC v DE, BC v DF, BC v EF
Group 3 (Players G, H, I) v Group 4 (Players J, K, L)
GH v JK, GH v JL, GH v KL GI v JK, GI v JL, GI v KL HI v JK, HI v JL, HI v KL
Each player would therefore play 6 matches with 2 different partners against 6 different partnerships. Each match would be 3 x 15 points with a point per game won awarded to the players. The two players with the most points won at the end of the league stages would then team up for the semi finals against the 7th and 8th highest point scorers. The 3rd and 4th highest points scorers would play the 5th and 6th highest points scorers in the other semi final. Winners to meet in the final.
This format would create a total of 21 matches with those reaching the final playing 8 matches each.
A decision on how the groups will be formed will be decided when the final entry is confirmed.
