Wexford celebrates 3 Leinster All Star award winners
Leinster GAA Handball All Star Awards
Young female player of the year
The continued progress made by Cora Doyle was officially recognized during the week when she was named Leinster’s Young Female Player of the Year for 2017. The St. Josephs player had enjoyed a memorable provincial campaign which saw her win minor singles and doubles in 40×20 and under 17 singles in 60×30.
At national level she went on to win the All Ireland 60×30 under 17 singles title and also played a key role in Leinster’s long overdue win in the inter provincial Girls Team of 10 event. She capped a great year by winning the womens A singles at the Irish Nationals in Mayo a few weeks ago.
Volunteer of the year
Gavin Buggy had his contribution acknowledged by this award which recognized his ongoing coaching work with the juveniles of Leinster. His diligent preparatory work with the girls of the province ahead of the inter provincial championship played a large part in Leinster’s eventual triumph in a competition that had eluded them for a long time. Gavin continues to coach in his local St. Josephs club and around the county in his role as County Coaching Officer.
Club of the year
The outstanding work carried out by the committee of Castlebridge Handball Club made them strong candidates for this award and they turned out to be very worthy winners. The award takes account of outstanding contribution to handball in many areas including, on court success at county, provincial and All Ireland level, promotional and development work, provision of new or upgraded facilities at the club, increase in membership and participation, a strong commitment to the committee system and any other factor considered to have made a positive contribution to the sport in their local area.
Castlebridge scored heavily on all fronts and are setting a clear example for others to follow.
