Canada beckons for 12 Wexford players as the World Championships appear on the horizon

A small but select band of 12 Wexford handballers will depart for Calgary in the coming week or so and the good wishes of their clubs and communities will go with them as they embark on the long journey to the World Handball Championships in Canada.

For some the ultimate objective will be outright victory in their chosen event, while others will measure success a bit differently. The joy and experience gained from being there will stand to the younger players into the future but for everybody who makes the trip the occasion will be one to savour as handball people from around the world mingle together in a spirit of friendship and competitiveness.

The Wexford contingent is led by Daniel Kavanagh from St. Josephs Handball Club and hopes are high that the Team Ireland representative at Boys 17 and Under singles will have a good tournament. His brother Josh will take part in the Boys 13 and under events.

Others making the trip are three members of the one family, Bobby, Mark and Robert Doyle. Dad Robert will be strongly fancied to do well in the 45 and over B events while Bobby and Mark will play the Boys 11 and under and 13 and under respectively.

Kilmyshall Handball Club will be represented by father and son Jimmy Dunne (55 and over B) and Laurence Dunne (17 and under), along with Tom Byrne (55 and over B) and Sean Nolan (Men’s C).

County PRO Noel Holohan has trained hard for the championship and he will enter the C grade as one of the favourites for the title. The Templeudigan man has the capability and determination to win and is certain to be there or thereabouts.

Two previous winners of world titles Gavin and Ned Buggy are also travelling to the championship with Gavin entered in the 40 and over and Ned competing in 65 and over.

Family members will accompany some of the above and Wexford County Committee would like to wish everyone who is making the trip a safe and wonderful journey.
